Treating Headaches, Sinus Problems and Tinnitus with Cranial Sacral Therapy

People ask me what type of conditions does “cranial sacral therapy” (CST) help?

If you have never tried CST it’s a good question.

The answer is “almost everything.”

I’ll briefly explain how cranial sacral therapy works. Your body needs to be lined up so all your joints can move freely.  If they do not your muscles tighten and this causes a decrease of blood and nerve flow.  That then causes more problems in joints, muscles and organs and you will not feel well.

Your cranium consists of many bones and they too need to move freely.  They move minimally compared to other joints but their movement is crucial to well being.

Every cell of our body is connected and problems in one area affect distant areas. For example, a foot problem can cause neck pain and headaches purely because of postural changes.  Another example is neck tension. It causes tight muscles, which decreases blood flow to the head and causes poor thinking, headaches, and fatigue.

Not only are muscle and joint problems helped by CST, but things like heartburn, sore throats sinus pain, ear infections and sometimes gut issues are helped.

Let’s talk about ear infections.  These are common in babies and children and are mainly due to the temporal bones of the head (the bone that the hearing apparatus is housed in) being off balance.  When these bones are off balance, the ear fluid doesn’t drain properly, which leads to infection.   Having a cold or flu can also cause ear infections.

CST can balance the temporal bones and help drainage, which relieves the infection and prevents further ear problems.  Even adults with ear pain can usually be helped.

Sinus problems is are also worth talking about here.  If you have had a sinus problem for years or just recently, treatment can usually help.  There are several causes of sinus problems and a few common causes are:  1) A neck problem.  2) Restrictions of the bones of the face related to the nose and sinuses.  3) Allergies.

The first two are treatable with CST and most patients have great results.  Allergies relate to the immune system and that is a complex process, however, it also relates to numbers 1 & 2.

Again, getting your nasal bones and cranium aligned relieves sinus pain, even for allergies.  Determining the actual cause of the allergy is necessary, as well and treating it with diet and other appropriate measures.

Also related to the ear is tinnitus or ringing in the ear, as it is commonly known.  I bet you were told it can’t be helped.  That really depends on the cause.  If you’ve experienced very loud noises that have damaged the tiny hair like structures inside the cochlea of the ear, then it is hard to repair that.

If your tinnitus came on for no apparent reason, then CST may be helpful.   Even if you have had a skull fracture in the past or another type of head injury, CST can often help.  It does take a number of treatments, particularly if the tinnitus is long standing.
