Most people understand that the processed foods and fast foods that make up a large part of the American diet, are not good for them. They are also aware that consuming these kinds of foods regularly can contribute to weight gain and lead to conditions like heart disease and Type II diabetes. But what many are not aware of is that fact that some of these foods contain ingredients that have been chose scientifically to increase the risk of cancer, sometimes significantly. Below are five of the unhealthiest cancer-causing foods that should definitely be avoided.
Genetically Modified Organism’s
There is a good reasons why so many people across the political spectrum and around the world have objected to genetically modified foods. Many studies have shown that both the consumption of these foods and exposure to the residues of the chemicals used to raise these foods can increase the risk of cancer. Unfortunately, GMO’s rank among the most commonly consumed foods in America, including soy and soy products, corn and canola. The best way to avoid these GMO’s is to buy organic, which is certified to not be genetically modified.
Nothing could be more American than hot dogs, but this favorite junk food as well as deli meats, bacon and sausage are processed with sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate both. While these additives might help them to appear fresh, they have also been linked to cancer of the colon. The best way to avoid this is to buy uncured meats and if possible, make sure that the meat has been grass-fed, as this is much better for overall health.
It is not the popcorn itself that it the problem here, but the linings of the bags it comes in. One of the common chemicals in these liners is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which the FDA has classified as a “likely carcinogen” and has been linked to cancers of the liver, testicles and pancreas. Another common chemical is diacetyl, which has shown to be damaging to the lungs and may contribute to lung cancer. It is safest to simply pop your own popcorn on the stovetop.
Although a seemingly indispensable part of the American diet, sodas are incredibly unhealthy. Their high sugar, coloring and chemical content helps to acidify the body and also helps to stimulate the development and growth of cancer cells. Common ingredients like caramel color have been specifically linked to incidence of cancer. It is best to drink water, unsweetened ice tea or even organic juices rather than these sodas.
As the obesity problem grows worse, many people turn to products marketed as “diet” or “lite” to help lose weight. However, many such products contain aspartame which not only contributes to weight gain, but has been linked to a variety of neurological disorders, including the development of cancerous brain tumors. Instead of eating processed diet foods, a whole foods diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and such will help to aid natural weight loss and actually reduce cancer risk.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among Americans. However, avoiding processed foods like the ones mentioned above, as well as eating a healthy diet can greatly reduce the risk of developing this serious disease.
