Things to Remember when Selecting your Eye Glass Frames

Are you shopping for a new pair of glasses?  While at one time your options would have been fairly limited, today there are hundreds, if not thousands, of options out there.  You’ll find everything from traditional metal frames to flexible ones that bend in all directions to plastic ones that have rhinestones and other decorations on them.  You can even have a pair of custom-made glasses created for you.  With all of those choices, how to you go about finding the perfect pair of eye glass frames that are stylish, professional, and fit your overall look?  It can be difficult, but these tips and tricks will help narrow down your selection and make it easier for you to find exactly what you’re looking for.

The Size of the Frames

The first place to start when shopping for designer eyewear is the size of the frames.  You’ll find that frames have three numbers that indicate the size.  These measurements include the length of the glasses at the temples and the sizes of both the lens and of the part of the frame that goes across the nose (called the bridge).  However, these measurements do not include how thick your lenses will be, so keep that in mind!  Generally, the measurements are found either inside one of the arm pieces or on the bridge.  The first number is usually the lens size, the second is the bridge, and the final size is the arm/temple length.  If there’s a fourth number, it’s the height of the lens area.

So why is the size so important?  If you go with lighter frames that are thinner, you’ll find that they may actually fit better and look better if you have a smaller face.  However, if you have a larger face, these glasses may actually look too small for you.  Larger frames might be better in that case.

The Shape of the Frames

But glasses frames don’t just come in different sizes—they come in different shapes, too.  This is good because people have different shaped faces, and not all glasses are going to look right on everyone.  If your face is oval-shaped, you’re in luck—most glasses look great on people with oval-shaped faces!  But if your face is more, say, square, then you’re actually going to want to go with glasses that are more rounded.  This will help balance out your features.

Types of facial shapes:

  • Square
  • Round
  • Triangular
  • Oblong
  • Oval
  • Heart
  • Diamond

Color and Prints

Your next step is to look at the color or the print on the frames.  If you’re looking to explore stylish and designer eye glass frames, you’re probably not looking for a boring silver, black, or brown.  While those are all options, they’re also fairly traditional.  However, do keep in mind that not everyone can pull off a pair of hot pink glasses or frames done in a leopard print.  Finding the right color frames starts with looking at your own eye color, skin color, and even your hair color.  You want to make sure that your glasses fit with your overall look.  If you’re really pale, for example, white frames are going to fade out on you, while black frames are going to really pop.

Your Fashion Style

You also need to think about your particular fashion style and what type of glasses will work with most of your outfits. Whether it is a rockstar eyewear style or a professional look eyewear, it should suits on your personality. If you consider yourself very fashionable, you may not want square, black glasses since those are generally not considered stylish.  If you’re younger, though, you may be able to pull off frames that have fun designs on them or are brightly colored.  Just remember that these glasses may not necessarily go with every outfit, and they may not look that professional.  If you’re a lawyer, standing in court arguing a case while wearing pink glasses may not convey the professional look you want.

On the other hand, there are some frames that really work with just about anything.  Silver, gold, and even black can pair well with most outfits and accessories.  Since glasses have become fairly cheap these days, you may even want to buy a few different pairs with different frames so you can wear the pair that best fits your outfit or the situation.

Frame Materials

The material your glasses are made out of is another secret of selecting right eyewear.  If you know that metal doesn’t really look right on you, you can skip all those metal frames and go for ones made from plastic.  On the other hand, if you need a pair of glasses that are flexible and will stand up to damage, you might ask to see those made out of titanium or titanium alloy.  However, you do have to be careful if you have an allergy to certain metals since some of these alloys do contain things like nickel.
