Sweat Your Way to a Healthier 2014: Infrared Saunas

image

I was introduced to the Infrared Sauna experience when I was diagnosed with Lymes several years ago. I fell in love with the well-being and complete relaxation I felt afterwards. We purchased an in home version for the convenience and to reduce the cost of going to a spa 3-5 times per week. I believe it helped me recover much more quickly and maintain my good health. Our teenagers loved the fact that it helped cleanse their pores and reduce acne. The greatest allure of Infrared saunas is that they produce vigorous sweating and increased heart rate, comparable to moderate exercise.  This is especially goodnews for those who have limited mobility, chronic illness or injuries and can’t exercise.

In 1982, Journal of the American Medical Association authors noted, “A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 grams in a sauna, consuming nearly 300 calories, which is equivalent to running 2-3 miles.  A heat-conditioned person can easily sweat off 600-800 cal with no adverse effects.”

Japanese and Chinese practitioners have utilized Infrared Saunas and have noted benefit in the following:  Arthritis (TMJ, Traumatic, Rheumatoid, DJD), compression fractures, muscle tension and spasms, post-exercise muscle pain, bursitis, low-back pain and lumbar strain, menstrual pain, joint stiffness and eczema.

My favorite two benefits of the Infrared Sauna is the detoxification which occurs with sweating out toxins and the weight-loss you can experience while sitting in a relaxing sauna listening to soothing music.  Other benefits are:

  • Lowers Blood Pressure
  • Anti-Aging & Skin Purification
  • Wound Healing
  • Muscle Recovery
  • Strengthens the Immune System
  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Relief
  • Improved Circulation
  • Stress Reduction
  • Better Sleep
  • Overall Sense of Well Being

Cautions: Avoid staying in the sauna for longer than 30 minutes.  Start with 10-15 minute sessions. And be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after taking a sauna. If you have any kind of illness or are sensitive to heat, check with your healthcare professional prior to using the sauna. Listening to some soothing background music may help you unwind and relax while enjoying the healing benefits.

You can locate a spa in your area to experience an Infrared Sauna for yourself: SpaFinder.com a typical 30 minute session runs from $30 – $50.
