Whiten your Teeth Naturally

Americans are completely hooked on having the whitest teeth possible.  We spend more than $1 billion annually on white strips alone, not to mention in-office treatments, veneers and other dental procedures designed to whiten teeth.  And according to a survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, our demand for whitening services shows no sign of slowing down!

If you aren’t willing to spend a small fortune on cosmetic dental treatments, a simple change in diet can help attain and retain whiter teeth!  Certain foods contain whitening enzymes, promote saliva production or naturally scrub teeth. So here are some great ideas to help you whiten your teeth naturally.

Crunchy fruits and veggies: Apples, celery, carrots and other crunchy produce can stimulate the production of saliva, which serves as a natural mouth cleanser.  If fruits and veggies are also raw, they will scrub your teeth clean as you chew.

Broccoli: Broccoli is full of antioxidants that can protect your body from cancer and a slew of other illnesses and diseases.  It also contains Vitamin C, which can help prevent tooth decay.  The iron in broccoli helps form a shield over teeth that protects enamel and prevents staining, and if eaten raw, broccoli can exfoliate the surface of your teeth.

Oranges and pineapples: Tart fruits increase saliva production, which is a natural way to cleanse the mouth.  Rubbing the tooth’s surface with the inside of an orange peel (the side with the white stringy bits) can naturally whiten teeth, as well.

Onions, basil and garlic: These flavor-boosters are great at reducing the buildup of plaque and reducing cavities.  Eating these make teeth healthier overall and can prime teeth for other whitening treatments.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice is well-known for its ability to lighten hair in the sun, but it can also whiten teeth.  Mix lemon juice with a bit of baking soda and rub onto teeth.  But do be careful and use this only for a one time or occasional remedy as too much lemon juice can erode tooth enamel if used repeatedly and undiluted.

Shiitake Mushrooms: This particular type of fungi is absolutely packed with a sugar called lentinan.  This sugar works to prevent bacteria in the mouth from forming plaque that can build up and erode tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to stains.

Strawberries: Even though strawberries will do an incredible job of staining clothing, they contain an enzyme called malic acid, which can whiten your teeth naturally and polish your teeth while you chew.  By making a paste out of mashed strawberries mixed with baking soda and leaving it on your teeth for 5 minutes before brushing, you might notice whiter teeth over the course of a few months.

Water: Drinking water helps keep your body hydrated and healthy, but it also prevents stains from forming on teeth.  Swish your mouth out after drinking tea, coffee, or wine or eating foods that might leave behind stains to refresh teeth and keep them looking white and bright.  Water from the tap also includes fluoride, which further promotes oral health.  Steer clear of sparkling water, as the carbonation can erode tooth enamel.

Making small dietary changes can help promote both oral health and overall health, and it can also play a role in whitening your teeth naturally!
