Children’s Motrin recall September 2013 – Potential Plastic Particle Presence

In September, a unit from Johnson & Johnson stated through a press release the information that three different lots of Motrin Infants’ Drops in the original berry flavor were recalled. These three units were composed of over 200,000 bottles.

What lead to the Motrin recall?

The risk posed by these units was the presence of tiny plastic particles. This medicine is extremely popular for the lowering of fever and treatment of aches and pains for children under the age of two. The company has issued warnings that the medicine may actually be contaminated with PTFE specks, which is a type of plastic that is used in Teflon coatings. To date there have been no injuries or illnesses reported in relation to this contamination.

What the company has to say

In a series of reports from the McNeil unit of Johnson and Johnson, it is still unclear whether or not the bottles actually have the particles present in them. It has been indicated that the particles were found in a different product during manufacturing. The recall was issued due to the fact that each of these products contains Ibuprofen from the same third-party supplier.

Check your bottles

The bottles that were recalled are all half-ounce bottles and can be identified by their printed lot numbers: DCB3T01, DDB4S01 and DDB4R01. The McNeil unit of J&J is asking all retailers to remove the affected products from the store shelves and any consumer should cease use of the product immediately. Consumers are able to receive a refund by calling 1-877-414-7709.

The Motrin that has been recalled was manufactured at the plant located in Beerse, Belgium. The primary manufacturing plant for McNeil, which is located in Fort Washington, PA., is still closed after a string of recalls in 2010 regarding brands such as Zyrtec, Motrin and Tylenol.
