Blue Bell Ice Cream Recall after 3 Deaths Reported

Blue Bell established in 1907 hasn’t had a recall in 105 years but that record was just shattered with this development. It has been announced that the FDA issued a full consumer alert on specific versions of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Make sure you check your freezer and let others know to do the same.

Five people were hospitalized at the same Kansas hospital for unrelated problems before developing invasive listeriosis, a finding that strongly suggests their infections were acquired in the hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Three deaths were reported among those five patients.

Blue Bell is taking all necessary precautions and has stopped production and distribution of ice cream products from that line and has removed them from stores and any other retail outlets. The Blue Bell cups, pints or half gallons are all being given the all clear. The  products included in the recall are:

Chocolate Chip Country Cookie
Great Divide Bar
Sour Pop Green Apple Bar
Cotton Candy Bar
Scoops
Vanilla Stick Slices
Almond Bar
No Sugar Added Mooo Bar (regular Mooo Bars are not included)

The FDA Advisory states that consumers should not eat these ice cream products and should throw out any of these products they may still have in their freezer.

Safest way to ensure your ice cream is not full of unhealthy ingredients and safe is to make your own homemade ice cream.

The testing of Country Cookie, Great Divide and Scoops are testing positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe illness. The company is also recalling other ice cream items because they were made on the same production line.

What to watch for if you have consumed this brand and particular flavors. The symptoms of Listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and vomiting. If you have eaten Blue Bell and have these symptoms you should see a doctor. The frightening part is that symptoms can occur three to up to 70 days after exposure. The disease is prevalent in the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.

No enforcement action has been taken against the facility, and it is operating in compliance with food safety laws according to reports.
