7 Natural Ways to Keep Spiders Out of Your Home

Spiders are an important part of the environment – but that environment shouldn’t include your home! Fortunately, there are ways to rid your home of these pests without actually hurting them or having to use dangerous pesticides to do. Below are seven suggestions to keep the house spider-free naturally.

Use a Mint Spray

Spiders (and other insects) hate the smell of mint, so one of the simplest ways to keep spiders out of the home is to add essential oil of mint to a spray bottle full of water and spritz it all over the house. The house will smell great and be spider free as well!

Keep it Clean

Another good way to insure that your eight-legged friends won’t come visiting is simply to keep the house clean: regular vacuuming, dusting and clearing out clutter will keep your home healthy but also give the spiders less of a reason to move in.

Spritz a Vinegar Spray

Like peppermint, white vinegar has a strong scent that is repellant to spiders and other insects. Mix one part vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle and spritz it all over your house – this is a great disinfectant as well as insect repellent!

Clear Away Habitat

If your yard has piles of leaves, grass clippings or piles of wood near the house, these places are a great habitat for spiders, who will soon start trying to move in with you and set up camp. Make sure these areas are cleared away, so as not to give them a habitat to settle into.

Do a Citrus Rub

Spiders also hate the smell of citrus – lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit. Another great way to repel them naturally is to rub citrus peels on baseboards, windowsills and any other popular spider hang-out and this will help to keep them away.

Invest in Cedar

Cedar mulch around the home and cedar hangers or sachets at critical points around the house can also help with this problem, as spiders also hate the smell and will stay away from it. It has the added attraction of also deterring moths.

Try Chestnuts

Chestnuts are another natural way to repel spiders – you can place them in your windowsills or along baseboards in your home to act as yet another natural repellent that will keep the spiders at bay without actually harming them.

So give one or more of these methods a try. None of the suggestions above are difficult or expensive and none of them involve actually killing the spiders, which is their place are an important part of your yard and garden habitat. However, many of these methods will effectively keep them away, even without the use of dangerous chemicals, so everybody wins.
