5 Foods You Should Eat to Manage Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is becoming an epidemic – and not just in the Unites States and other developed countries, but in emerging economies who have a growing middle class with access to more processed foods and other high-calorie food sources than has been true in the past. While the search continues for a cure, in the meantime, learning how to manage the condition from day to day is extremely important. One way to manage it is through diet and through including foods such as those listed below that can be very beneficial for diabetes patients.

Beans

Some diabetics may want to shy away from beans in their diet since they are high in carbohydrates; however, the carbohydrates in beans are complex and break down slowly in the body. This means that eating them can help keep the blood sugar levels more stable and prevent the spikes or drops that can be so harmful to diabetes patients. They are also full of fiber and lean protein, both also great for managing this condition.

Oatmeal

Again, diabetics may worry about eating this dish since oatmeal, too, is a high-carbohydrate food. However, like beans, it is high in complex carbohydrates and fiber. This means that, like beans, they are digested slowly by the body and not only keep the blood sugar on a more even keel, but act as a natural appetite suppressant for diabetics trying to manage their disease through weight loss.

Fish

Fish – especially mild, white-fleshed fish like cod, catfish or tilapia, are also a great choice for diabetics. They provide the kind of lean protein that, like complex carbohydrates, prevents a roller-coaster blood sugar, especially when prepared with vegetables. They are great when baked, grilled or roasted, all diabetic-friendly ways to prepare food.

Yogurt

Yogurt is another great diabetic food, provided it is unsweetened (check the labels carefully, as some yogurts can have a good deal of sugar added to them, not helpful if you have diabetes). Yogurt contains both good carbohydrates and lean protein, which help diabetics both with blood sugar control and weight loss.

Almonds

More and more research is coming out that reveals almonds to be a perfect diabetic food. This is because they are a great blend of healthy monounsaturated fats and magnesium, a mineral shown to be essential if the body is to break down carbohydrates properly. In addition to this they are also high in fiber, which can also prevent spikes or drops in the blood sugar.

So if you are wanting to follow a diet that will be diabetic-friendly and not cause too much fluctuation in the blood sugar, consider adding or increasing your intake of these foods to your diet. They can go a long way to helping with natural, day-to-day management of this condition.
