Most people, when they are done with their cup of java in the morning, will throw their used coffee grounds away. They do not realize there are some really amazing things that you can do with them that will not only save on the amount of waste you are producing, but also help out around the home in some really cool ways. 10 ways to recycle coffee grounds around the garden and home are listed below.

Repel Pests

One great way to use coffee grounds in the garden is to put them around your plants to help keep them safe from pests like slugs, snails and ants, who will not like going through the grounds and are also repelled by the smell. If you mix the grounds with dried orange peel, it is also possible to ward off mammals.

Fertilize Your Soil

If you have shrubs such as azaleas or hydrangeas that prefer an acidic soil, coffee grounds are just the thing to use! Mix coffee grounds up with grass clippings or mulched leaves and spread them around the plants to put nitrogen and phosphorous into the soil.
Use for Compost
Coffee grounds are a great additive to the compost pile because they are nitrogen-rich “green” materials and will also help attract worms to your compost pile.

Pep Up Your Carrots

When you sow carrot seeds, mix them in with dried coffee grounds before you plant them to give them an extra boost right at the start. This will help you get larger and more abundant produce from your carrot patch!

Take Care of Food Odor

Coffee grounds are much like baking soda, in that they can absorb food odors from the refrigerator; all you have to do is put them in an open container in the back of your fridge and change them out every few weeks.

Use as a Scrub

A damp cloth dipped in old coffee grounds makes an excellent natural scrub for food that is stuck on counters of other kitchen services, because it is not as abrasive as some household cleaners and is less likely to leave unwanted scratches.

Dye It!

Use the staining power of coffee to your advantage: rewet old ground to make a dye for anything from cloth to paper give a beautiful golden tone.

Exfoliate Your Skin

Coffee grounds can be mixed with a little warm water or coconut oil and used as an all-over body scrub to exfoliated and moisturize your skin.

Use for a DIY Spa Facial

Mix two tablespoons of used coffee grounds with two tablespoons cocoa powder and two tablespoons heavy cream and one tablespoon of honey. Mix well and apply to your face for a rejuvenating antioxidant-rich facial treatment.

Treat Your Hair

Before shampoo, grab a handful of coffee grounds and rub into your hair, then continue with your washing and rinsing as normal. This will help remove hair product residue from your hair without damaging it.

So before you start to toss away those coffee grounds, think about trying some of these DIY tips. They will leave your garden, home and you yourself in better shape and reduce the amount of waste you are throwing out at the same time.
