Weird, wacky yet effective ways to deal with constipation

When you are struggling with constipation, it can really put a damper on your life. It’s painful, frustrating, and can sap you of all of your energy. Over the counter laxatives are what most people turn to first in their fight against constipation, but it is inadvisable for many reasons, most importantly because they can be habit-forming. This harms your body in many ways, for example, it can mask underlying problems, cause gas and stomach pain, and even damage your colon. (1)

So what is a person to do when they need a colon-friendly method to clean out the plumbing?

Natural constipation solutions

Consider these natural constipation solutions next time you’re feeling stopped up.

1. Breathe it out

Would you be surprised to find out that breath work is a constipation clearing technique that has been used very successfully with more than 150 Russian medical doctors with thousands of patients? With a success rate of over 80% – it is certainly worth considering! (2)

It consists of the following:

  • When you are sitting on your toilet, pinch your nose gently after you exhale, and begin to hold your breath. You can do this comfortably for probably about 20 seconds – but hold it as long as you can.
  • After you release your grip on your nose, inhale through only your nose, with reduced breathing (smaller inhalations than usual).
  • Relax your body entirely, and then repeat the cycle. This will put your body in a very relaxed state with near zero tension, and make it easier for your body to make a bowel movement.

2. Prop your feet up

Did you know that there is such a thing as “improper potty position?” Well, now you know! The typical way in which we sit on a toilet to do our business is not a natural position for stool elimination at all. This can lead to straining, and inability to eliminate completely. However, this doesn’t mean you need to squat like you are in the woods camping by any means.

Simply get yourself a small stool (pardon the expression) or just turn a small bathroom-sized trash can upside down and prop your feet up! This maneuver creates a much easier, less stressful (for your colon) way to move your stools without pain and effort.

3. Baking soda, the wonder ingredient

The endless uses of baking soda for cleaning, cooking and beauty are well known. In addition to it being super useful around the house, it can even help you relieve constipation! The bicarbonate, of which it is made of, is a natural pressure reliever. It encourages air to be released, and it even re-alkanizes your stomach, which helps neutralize the acids. All of this helps you to have a smooth, easy bowel movement. (3)

Simply put a teaspoon of baking soda into about 1/4 cup of warm water, and drink it up.

In addition to the above ideas, make sure you drink plenty of water and eat plenty of high fiber foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and grains to help keep your plumbing clean and clear.
