Why Wear Sunglasses Indoors?

Some people (mostly older people) see others wearing sunglasses indoors and can’t help but shake their heads.  People who do this get made fun of on a regular basis.  Some think the look is just stupid, while others wonder how someone wearing sunglasses indoors can even see anything.  But while it may seem silly or impractical, others find the idea of wearing sunglasses indoors to be stylish and actually really cool.  Here are a few reasons why you might want to wear sunglasses indoors.

You’re Sensitive to Light

If you’re sensitive to light due to being photophobic or because you’re dealing with something like a migraine, wearing sunglasses indoors can help provide some relief.  Some people’s eyes are so extremely sensitive to light that they truly do need to wear sunglasses indoors or face immense pain.  Without their sunglasses, even standard light bulbs can be too much for them.  While it’s rare to be that photophobic, it does happen.  Here are a few other reasons why someone may have a medical need to wear sunglasses indoors:

  • They have a headache
  • They have very dry eyes
  • They’ve just had eye surgery

You’re Blind

The blind often wear sunglasses all the time.  It doesn’t matter to them how bright or dark it is, of course, and some simply don’t want people staring at their eyes.  People like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles wore sunglasses indoors all the time, and they definitely weren’t ridiculed for it.  In fact, it became a part of their trademark style.  Even if you’re blind, you still want to wear eyeglasses that suit your personality.  You can have a friend help you find ones that are perfect.

You’ve had an Eye Exam

If you’ve been to the optometrist and have had your eyes dilated as part of the exam, they will have instructed you to wear sunglasses for the rest of the day (and will give you a decidedly unstylish pair of cardboard ones if you don’t have your own designer eyewear!).  You may need to wear your sunglasses indoors for the rest of the day, especially if you work in an area that’s brightly lit.

It Hides Bruises and Deformities

Those who have bruises around their eyes or have any type of eye deformity may choose to wear sunglasses both indoors and outdoors in order to hide what they find embarrassing.  For bruises, it can be a temporary fix until their face heals up.  Others may find that they want to wear their sunglasses all the time in order to hide a birthmark or other facial feature they dislike.  Some may even look for glasses frames that are very wide to conceal more of their face.

Sunglasses as Disguises

While some people use sunglasses to conceal injuries, others wear them indoors as a type of disguise.  They may want to hide the shape of their eyes or the upper part of their face from some people.  Some may do this if they’re planning a crime or if they’re a law enforcement agent undercover.  That doesn’t mean that everyone who has their sunglasses on indoors is a criminal, of course, but having the villain wear sunglasses all the time is a popular cliché in movies and television.

It’s Intimidating

One reason bad guys are often shown wearing sunglasses indoors is because it can be very intimidating.  We get a lot of information from the eyes.  They do say that the eyes are the window to the soul, and when that window has the shades drawn, it cuts off one of the ways we connect to people.  As children, we’re often told to make eye contact when we’re talking, especially if it’s a serious conversation.  But when someone has sunglasses on, especially those that are reflective, it’s impossible to do so.  You have no idea, then, if the person is looking at you, at something else, or if they’ve closed their eyes completely.  This lack of ability to see their eyes can make the conversation very uncomfortable.

Sunglasses are a Fashion Accessory

Many people buy sunglasses with designer logos on them or that have been endorsed by celebrities.  These sunglasses are more than just a way of protecting their eyes from the bright light—they’re a fashion accessory that helps create their individual style.  This is why many people buy multiple pairs of cheap spectacles online.  They can then wear a different pair with each outfit, allowing them to accessorize even more than usual.  While you may not want multiple pairs of sunglasses, you can find ones that perfectly fit your style and wear them all the time.

Do any of these reasons resonate with you?  If they do, you may want to try wearing your sunglasses indoors just to see what type of reaction you get.  If you find that blocking out the light helps your eyes, you should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss it further.  If you find that you just feel cool wearing your shades indoors, then ignore any comments aimed at you—if you like how you feel and your overall look, then go for it.
