The US Government has recognized the animal trial of the National Cancer Institute where cannabis appeared to kill cancer cells of mice and rats.
The US health department commented on the website of The National Cancer Institute that, the lab experiment conducted on animals showed cancer killing effects of the active ingredients of cannabis known as cannabinoids. These particular chemicals have very little harmful effects on normal cells. The reduction in the size of a tumor is believed to be due to enhanced apoptosis or cell death, hampered cell growth and blood vessel formation. A lot of scientists have started to think cannabis as a natural cancer killer.
Experiments conducted on mice and rats revealed very effective roles of cannabinoids in preventing colon, breast and liver cancers. Effects of chemotherapy can also be enhanced with cannabis.
However, there is no sufficient human trial to consider cannabis as an option for cancer treatment either in oral or inhalation form. Researchers suggested more studies to make cannabis a safe and effective adjunct to chemotherapy and other cancer treatment options.
Cannabis also contains opiate analgesic compounds for which a lot of cancer patients take it for pain relief provided that the state allows its use as medicine.
The Cancer Research charity opposed this news and stated that no evidence exists regarding anticancer effects of cannabis.
According to Spokesman, there is no sufficient data or clinical trial to declare cannabinoids, either natural or synthetic form as a treatment option for cancer patients. More research is required to come up with a conclusion regarding its use in cancer.
