It’s the Season of Thanks and Family Recipes

image

It’s the season of thanks when many of us dig out those old family recipes.  Traditional recipes passed down that we love to make, enjoy and share for the holiday feast.  It may be our Aunt’s famous stuffing or Grandmother’s cheesy potato casserole, our cousin’s pumpkin cheesecake and Moms moist succulent turkey.  And without giving it much thought, we may even have an uninvited guess at our table.  GMO’s.

“Over the past few decades an overlapping monopoly of food production has developed in the United States.  Ten corporations control 32 percent of the commercial seed market, and 100 percent of the market for genetically engineered or transgenic seeds.”(1)  GMO’s are genetically modified organisms, which can be considered a toxic experiment on our food supply.

With a conscience thought you can ask yourself: For my holiday dinner did I purchase conventional/industrial, processed, pasteurized, irradiated, palm oil, rBGH, antibiotic fed, corn fed, boxed, fat-free, low-fat, corn syrup, canned, coated and frozen foods, or did I buy fresh organic?  What about that Butterball? (2) That Kosher Corn fed Turkey?  That diet cola?  And don’t forget the cream cheese, whip cream and the canned cranberries!  They even had them on sale!  Some say we are programmed to just shop this time of year, without giving it much thought.  Reality is, if we knew some foods were about to have a negative impact on the health of our loved ones, would we make better choices?  Are we being manipulated by advertisements and coerced to buy right now and for a limited time only? (3)  Or are we stuck in the romanticism of the holiday movement?

Food manufacturers are well aware of people wanting to choose healthier foods and have found ways to market the same old junk to health conscious people as well.  They do this by adding misleading labels like “whole grain” or “low fat”, “smart food”, “natural” and “Kind”.  Marketing is big business!  Misleading labels are purposely designed to cleverly trick people into thinking that they’re making healthy choices for themselves and their family. (4)

A product claiming to be “low fat” does not mean it is a healthy fat.  The “low fat” diet promoted by the mainstream nutrition guidelines is an unconscionable failure and an advertising ploy.  Numerous long-term studies show that it never worked neither for weight loss or for disease prevention. (5)

The label “fat free” led to an overabundance of processed “fat free” foods to be brought to the market.  Because foods taste bad without the fat, the food manufacturers increased the added sugar and chemicals to satisfy Americas taste buds and addiction to sweets.(5)

The brain is over 60% fat and needs good fats to thrive.  Some examples of good fats are organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic raw nuts and Avocados.  These good fats supply our brain with important nutritional elements that help our brain stay healthy.  Consuming a daily dose of toxins, chemicals, genetically modified foods and low-fats alters our energy and frequency at the cellular level and can lead to early signs of brain issues.  Research tells us that “a sick brain” is now quite common in age groups from 15-44.  From obesity to autoimmune disorders we have a “Booming Industry” because of toxic foods & toxic chemical exposures. (6)

Those who live in denial may say something like:  “Well I’m not dead yet.”  “I’ve been eating this way all my life and I’m still here…”   And you’re right, illness doesn’t just show up in an instant.  Degenerative diseases are the result of years of neglect.  Neglecting the delicate balance of the 50 to 60 trillion cells that make up our physical body.

Your guest arrive….  The table is set, and we have enough food to feed an army!  We sit down to eat….  and we eat, and eat, until we are totally and completely stuffed!  But wait, there’s pumpkin pie, pecan pie, topped with ice cream, whip cream and holiday cookies and…..Leptin steps aside.  Leptin is our internal stop button telling us we’re full, we’ve had enough.  This master hormone can affect the delicate balance of other hormones in the entire body.   When we override Leptin, overeating has more to do with ill health, than weight gain.  Overeating not only stresses our digestive system but also stresses our liver.  In todays world we have both inflammatory disorders because of a poor diet, overeating and unnecessary toxic exposure, which may play a causative roll to blood cells going awry.   Our food can be our medicine or increase our toxic overload.  Health is truly a matter of simple daily choices we make, compounded over a lifetime.

If we would love to live a long, healthy and vibrant life, than we need to become aware of how our daily choices will impact our vision and our goal, for ourselves and our loved ones.  Developing healthy daily habits will set us on the right path.  Then during all seasons, we purchase our ingredients through that increased awareness and knowledge.  We can still make all of those wonderful recipes passed down through generations.  Scrumptious, mouth watering, delicious, tables filled with vibrant colors from Mother Nature and all organic sourced, omitting GMO corn, corn fed meats, high fructose corn syrup, fat-free, marshmallows, diet sodas,  rBGH dairy cheese cake and alike.  We can avoid holiday bloating by cutting out sugar, alcohol, sodas, wheat, dairy and over eating.

With a little extra effort, reading labels, and making positive healthy choices, our holiday table will truly be a gift of thanks from us, directly honoring our family and friends.
