Recipes for Kidney Stone Prevention

“Chocolate” Pudding with Millet

Millet is great for this specialized diet as it has been proven to help prevent kidney stone formation and is also high in insoluble fiber, which also helps to keep stones from beginning in the first place. It has the additional benefit of being free of chocolate, which is high in oxalates and not good for those who have a history of kidney stones.


  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ cup chopped dates
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons carob powder
  • 1 ½ cup hot cooked millet


Process water and dates in a food processor, then transfer to a pot and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and blend in the other ingredients until smooth. Refrigerate and serve.

Stir-Fried Asparagus with Quinoa Noodles

This is a great-tasting recipe and includes asparagus, which is also a great food for preventing kidney stone formation due to the fact that it has natural diuretic and alkalizing properties.


  • 2 bundles of asparagus, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • 3 ½ tablespoons vegetable broth
  • 12 ounces dried quinoa noodles


Prepare noodles per direction on the package, then set aside. Saute ginger and garlic in oil in a wok, then add asparagus. Combine sugar, stock and soy sauce in a bowl and pour over the asparagus, then saute for about three minutes. Serve over cooked noodles.

Apple Slices with Cinnamon

In the Ayurvedic tradition, apples are commonly recommended as a beneficial food for those with a history of kidney stone formation. This is likely due to their high fiber content. The recipe below provides a quick and easy snack while providing an array of health benefits.


  • 1 medium apple, cut into slices with core removed
  • Dash of ground cinnamon


Lay apple slices out on a plate, sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy right away.
