Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease, where the blood sugar level is high. The blood has some quantity of glucose in it to keep the body energized. However, a lot of glucose is not right for the body. The body absorbs the glucose from the food and is prepared in the liver and then in the muscles. The blood carries the glucose in the cells. Insulin, the hormone secreted from pancreas helps the glucose to reach the cells of the body. If the body is unable to make insulin or the insulin does not work in a proper manner, glucose does not reach the cells and instead, it remains in the blood. This increases the glucose level in the blood and causes diabetes.

There are mainly three types of diabetes namely type1, type2 and gestational diabetes. The outcomes of type 1 and type 2, diabetes are similar. The result of this diabetes is that the glucose level rises in the blood and the cells do not get proper energy for functioning. These conditions often lead to critical heart diseases, kidney failures and stroke blindness etc. Gestational diabetes is mostly seen in women in the last month of pregnancy, but moves away after the birth of the baby and may occur again during the later stage of life.

Diabetes is an incurable ailment but by performing some exercises and following a strict diet chart in the daily life, one can reduce the symptoms and severity of this disease. The naturally occurring materials can help in controlling the blood sugar levels in the body. The normal and simple foods that control the high blood sugar level are given below:

Bitter Gourd

The other name of bitter gourd is bitter melon. It has blood glucose reducing properties and is very effective remedy for diabetes. It influences the glucose absorption in the whole body. It helps in increasing the pancreatic secretion of insulin. Bitter gourd is beneficial in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. If a person consumes bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach each morning, then the problem can be reduced.


It has the ability to lower down the sugar level in the blood and stimulate the production of insulin in the body. There are commonly two types of cinnamon, one is Cassia and the other one is Ceylon. The first one, which is injurious to health, is taken in excess amount because it contains a toxin known as coumarin. The other one is secure but the effects are not studied. The patients must mix one and a half tbsp. of cinnamon in warm water regularly until the results appear.


It is an herb that is also used in diabetes. The herb has hypoglycemic property that controls diabetes and enhances glucose tolerance. It improves the secretion of insulin that is dependent on glucose. Fenugreek is high in fibers hence; it controls the consumption of sugar and carbohydrates. Consumption of two tbsp. of fenugreek powder daily with milk brings down the sugar level.


It is the best source of vitamin C and improves the functioning of liver. The patients suffering from diabetes must mix the juice of Amla in the water and must consume in empty stomach for a few months. This can also be mixed with bitter gourd juice for getting the best results.

Black plum

The other name of black plum is jamun. Jamun contains anthocyanin, ellagic acid and hydrolysable tannins. These compounds help in controlling the sugar level of the blood. Every part of this plant is effective in fighting away the symptoms of diabetes. It must be included in the diet on a daily basis. Apart from these, the seeds are powdered and used every day even in the off-season.

Mango leaves

The new and soft leaves of the mango tree maintain the insulin level in the blood and improved lipid levels in the blood. The diabetic patient can soak 10-15 gentle leaves of the mango tree in water overnight and drink the water in empty stomach early in the morning daily.

Curry leaves

Because of their anti-diabetic properties, they prevent diabetes. The curry leaves contain an ingredient that controls the rate of breakdown of starch. Simply chew about 11 curry leaves in the morning and for getting the best results, continue this process for 3 to 4 months.

Diabetes is an incurable disease and has severe complications, if ignored. The only way to cope with this disease is to prevent the symptoms. This can be achieved by including some natural home remedies in the diet and by following their consumption regularly.
