Probiotics Destroy Toxic Chemicals In The Gut

There has been a lot of media coverage in recent years about probiotics and all the health benefits they can bring, including improved digestion, weight loss and strengthened immunity. These amazing microorganisms, which outnumber the other bodily cells 10 to 1, contribute to the overall genetic information in the body. They also are able to detoxify the body from various unwanted substances and break down a variety of chemicals, many of which have been linked to a number of chronic health conditions including hormonal disorders and cancer. Read on to find out more about what these chemicals are and how a healthy population of probiotic bacteria can fight against them.

Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (or BPA), is a nearly ubiquitous chemical found in paper money, printer receipts, dental composites and the liners of canned foods. BPA is an endocrine disruptor, meaning that it interferes with the functions of hormonal glands throughout the body. However, two of the most common strains of bifidobacterium and lactobacillus have been shown to reduce the intestinal absorption of BPA and make it easier for it to be excreted from the body.

Pesticides

Pesticides are used in conventionally raised foods of all kinds and the average person is largely exposed to them through their diet if they do not eat organic foods. One of the most common kinds are organophosphorus pesticides. The probiotic bacteria found in dishes like kimchi have shown to be able to use these pesticides like food, degrading it entirely by the end of 3 days.

Heavy Metals

Heavy metal toxicity comes from a number of sources, particularly things like seafood or conventionally raised foods due to the pesticides that are used to produce them. Fortunately, probiotics have the ability to bind to these metals, sequestering them from the rest of the body and making them easier to excrete from the body before they can do any damage.

Preservatives

Sodium nitrate, a common food preservative found in many processed meats and other products, is a known carcinogen which in multiple studies has been linked to the onset of colon cancer in particular. However, strains of probiotic bacteria, particularly lactobacillus, have been shown to be able to break these preservatives down efficiently.

Percholate

Percholate is a byproduct from the jet fuel and fireworks industry and is nearly ubiquitous, winding up in a variety of foods as well as municipal water supplies. This makes it difficult to avoid exposure, which is unfortunate since it is also an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to a variety of neurological dysfunctions. Bifidobacterium, a common strain of probiotic bacteria, has been shown to be capable of degrading this dangerous chemical.

So probiotic bacteria is not just good for improving digestion or strengthening the immune system. It can also help break down various dangerous chemicals which are difficult to avoid and which can cause a variety of chronic health conditions if they are not broken down properly in the body.
