People who are aware of natural health principles know that botanical essential oils – especially those based on herbs  are among the most health-promoting substances on the planet, able to do everything from fighting off bacterial infections in wounds to easing digestive disorders to even helping to prevent or treat the onset of cancer.

And among these essential oils, one in particular really stands out: the essential oil of oregano. This small, herbaceous shrub which is native to the Mediterranean basin but grows in many areas of the world, has been used by naturopaths and other traditional practitioners for its healing properties for thousands of years. Below, learn about the amazing healing properties of oregano and also how to make this essential oil at home.

Oil of Oregano’s Nutrient Value

The nutritional value of oil of oregano is nothing short of amazing. It contains a wealth of antioxidants as well as essential fatty acids that are needed by the body for long-term health. It is rich in vitamins like Vitamin A, C, E and K and contains a wealth of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and selenium. Its healthful properties stem from this combination of nutrients.

The Health Benefits of Oregano Essential Oil

One of the most amazing benefits of this essential oil is its anti-microbial properties. It contains compounds which have been proven to be effective against a wide array of viruses, fungi and bacteria and there is even evidence to suggest that it may prove useful against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria like MRSA. For this reason, it is gaining more attention in the medical community, which is struggling to find ways to treat these difficult strains.

Like many essential oils, oil of oregano is also believed to be a potent antic-carcinogenic substance, not only preventing the development of cancerous growths but killing them off if they are allowed to take root. This is believed to be due to its powerful antioxidant properties which reduce the free radical damage in the cells and make it less likely that cancer will develop. It is also believed that oregano oil fights cancer in a more general way, by strengthening the body’s immune system, its natural defense against pathogens like cancer cells.
