Bayer Pharmaceuticals producer of an IUD marketed as “Mirena” has been under fire for the implants dangerous side effects and now faces ongoing lawsuits as a result of this form of birth control. Among the many claims of negligence, Bayer is accused of intentionally selling a dangerous product, deceptive advertising and concealing the risk of complications.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its use in the United States in 2000. And according to FDA reports, there have since that time been more than 45,000 adverse events reported, including device expulsion, device dislocation and vaginal hemorrhage. The Mirena device consists of a small, T-shaped container of flexible plastic that releases continuous doses of the hormone levonorgesterel which is commonly found in oral contraceptives.

In some women, Mirena can cause serious complications, including devastating and life-threatening pregnancy outside the uterus, perforation of the uterine wall as well as a debilitating condition known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).  Mirena IUD victims should consider taking legal action against Bayer Pharmaceutical to be compensated for medical expenses, lost wages not to mention the pain and suffering. The first cases for Mirena injuries were filed against Bayer in 2011, and there are now over 1,000 lawsuits pending.

Many women were convinced by medical professionals that the Mirena IUD was a wonderful and safe form of birth control. The convenience and effectiveness rates on brochures and late night commercials had woman flocking to get theirs. What the woman of this failed experiment found instead of the promises of get and forget birth control were a long list of side effects. The Mirena side effects include:

  • Acne
  • Headaches
  • Breast tenderness
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Absence of periods (amenorrhea), typically after one year of use
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Cramping or pelvic pain
