Manuka honey is a unique one from New Zealand. It’s a mono-floral honey, which means it comes from only one pollen source. Manuka honey has long had a reputation as a “healing” honey and, because it comes from bees that have been busy pollinating the Manuka trees. A recent survey of people who bought the stuff showed that 58 per cent of them believed Manuka honey to be better than ordinary honey, but they didn’t know why.

Characteristic of Manuka Honey

It is common knowledge that all honey contains a natural occurring enzyme which produces hydrogen peroxide, a known antiseptic with proven antibacterial properties. The main characteristic of manuka honey? It’s thixotropic properties, meaning that it has the consistency of a gel in liquid form and becomes more fluid when shaken.

Adding honey to a glass of warm milk at bedtime helps the body relax and release melatonin into the brain, an important hormone affecting sleep quality and duration. In addition, the ingestion of manuka honey also helps with the slow release of glycogen needed for essential body functions during sleep.

Natural Antibiotics

The properties in manuka honey haven’t been shown to develop resistant bacteria, an annoying problem caused by the overuse of antibiotics that leads to the development of “superbugs” that can’t be treated with traditional treatment options. If manuka proves to be as effective as many small studies have found, it could be a powerful disease-fighting option.
