Is It Your Passion or Your Identity?

Passion is good, right?  When desire comes from the soul and creates a strong passion, the combination of your mental intension and physical determination can make your dreams come true!  But make sure that’s where your passion is coming from.  According to Eckart Tolle, some people become passionate about something because it gives them an identity.  Is your passion spirit- or ego-based?

The most passionate person I ever knew was always completely obsessed with his current passion of choice.  His subject of interest would sometimes change, but he pretty much stuck with only three.  He would make sure he knew everything there was to know about them, and he eventually acquired several large tattoos on his body to further flaunt one of his passions to the world.  These were not simply interests for him.  They were his identities.  People like to have identities, especially when they have low self esteem.  Identities feed the ego.  People identify themselves by their job, place of birth, family, religion, sexual orientation, interests, etc.  Identity helps us feel secure—inclines us to believe that we know ourselves.  But do we?  Perhaps the best way to define each of us is to say that we are souls—pure love energy created as an extension of the God-Source—inhabiting a body in order to create experience and expand ourselves.  In reality, we are all the same, currently having unique experiences and perceptions.  But don’t define yourself based on your current ideals.  Your perceptions are nothing more than your current limitations.  You expand yourself by how open and vast you choose to be.  You create yourself by becoming more than you currently are in the body-mind form.  “The second you define yourself, you constrain yourself within the parameters that you have chosen to value.”  ~ Jeshua Ben Joseph
