The Inner Saboteur

image

I’d like to go more deeply into a part of ourselves that most people recognize but don’t really know how to deal with – I call it the Inner Saboteur. Usually we look at various aspects on the outside, especially with all the news of the various things that are going on around us in the world. Our attention is often focused on the difficulties or the struggles or the perceived suffering that happens because of circumstances that are beyond our control, beyond our reach and outside of us.

Due to socialization and indoctrination, especially if brought up in a religious atmosphere, where the belief systems are imposed in a very stringent, moralistic or strong way that doesn’t support the lightness of being joyful, or the lightness of being alive, many people continue to circle around suffering because although they believe that spirituality is about being free, all their actions show that they actually believe that spirituality is about suffering; that it is about creating a certain way of being that continues a whole cycle of circumstances to happen and repeat themselves over and over and over again. Of course, this frustrates us because we believe that we are doing something that is positive, but on some level we can’t recognize that the inner saboteur, the inner identity, doesn’t correspond to the intention that we are putting out there to the world.

To work with the inner saboteur means we have to change the picture built throughout our lives from when we were little children and also the strong impressions received from before we were born into this world, from when we were in the womb. The only way to change the picture is not in a conscious way, but in the way that the mind understands the world, and to find the unconscious picture that we have about the world is to come back to a very deeply relaxed state. This is the essence of all meditation and all true spirituality, that first we have to let go of all the pictures that create stress or a lack of joy and come back to a sense of stillness. When we come back to that sense of stillness, then the mind can relax and expand to show you and the deepest aspect of your consciousness what is really going on.

When you relax you are able to see the pictures that are hidden there rather than when you are too busy or are circling around the same idea about certain things. Relaxation is step number one. When you relax, you don’t do anything, you just watch the movie that is going on inside of you. You see pictures that the mind and the ego create inside of yourself. As you become aware of this you will realize, like all spiritual traditions have in the many thousands of years that human beings have existed, that everything is like a movie, and it is interesting to watch this movie. You can simply witness the movie without trying to change or judge, or to do any type of specific action that would change the movie – just observe so you have the knowledge of what is going on inside of you.

As you watch the movie, you’ll often see that there are aspects of it that are not very pleasant. When you see this you create a state of awareness, and this is the second aspect of meditation, which is beyond relaxation and stillness. We want to give birth inside of ourselves to this state of awareness that allows us to create an action that changes the movie. This is important because spirituality is not about waiting for something to happen. It is about creating a certain action; a movement that is different from the actual movement that is happening at this moment, so that the energy is flowing to different parts of you. Your body, your mind, your emotions can be more in tune, more in harmony with the actual Divine aspect that is you and the world – the oneness that we live in.

The little trick is that the unconscious mind, the brain, functions in a very specific way. If you look slightly to the left of where you are looking, if you are looking forward then look a little bit to the left, this activates the unconscious brain. You can begin to send direct messages to the unconscious brain that allows those messages to go deeper than that part of you that I call the saboteur. You will find that when you directly communicate to that part of your brain which goes beyond such filtering, or beyond such pictures of sabotage and when you move your awareness, your eyes, the focus of your eyes a little bit to the left, there you can begin to see your ideal picture inside of yourself. This means not listening to the desires or what you want, or what would be perfect, but rather what makes you happy, what creates a sense of joy and a sense of freedom inside of yourself. Often this is very different from what you desire, or what some part of you, and the ego, thinks it needs or wants. When we do this, what we are doing is focusing our attention, and projecting the awareness that comes from that intention, from that part of ourselves that magnifies that awareness into actualization. This means that your awareness is not just an idea – it becomes grounded in the way your whole brain functions; how the neurons inside of your brain connect to one another and you become more intelligent.

Why not look slightly to the left inside of you, as you are still and relaxed, and discover that perhaps there is a field of beautiful flowers that you have never, ever imagined before. You’ve opened your eyes to a field, the potential that is there but hasn’t been discovered, and you feel and sense yourself in this beautiful field, where your imagination can run totally wild. It’s not limited by the mortgage or by children or responsibilities or stress, or any situations. You are free of those. You have created a new picture that is not related to the old dark saboteur that wants to control your mind or your feelings in order to feel the same as perhaps it felt when you were in the womb or one year old. You create a new picture where you are running in this beautiful field and you discover that the smells and the sensations in this field create a sense of joy. You see, joy allows your heart to expand and know that the potential is not just an idea. That the potential can be grounded in your physical body – and this is very important as it is the third aspect of meditation. Meditation needs to move from the ether, from the heavens, down to the physical realm I call earth. You need to earth those energies into yourself and into the realities you are facing here in this mundane world. When we do this we create the link, the divine link where we give birth to what we are here for, and that is linking the divine beautiful potential that is always there, open to us if we can see it. If we can use our body, use our consciousness to bring it down to a sense of reality, to the world that we live in, and bring it down and give birth to this, then it creates a super human being that goes beyond the physical realms. As we leave the limited consciousness and move forward to an enlightened state, then we help everyone else here on earth to see that this potential is not just a dream, but that it has actual possibilities in every day practical ways. We realize that the limitations have no validity and we wonder how could we have been stuck in the mud for so long believing it to be the only truth!
