Healthy Snacks: Positive Changes for 2014

As a freelance writer, nutrition enthusiast and mother of five, I get really fired up about healthy eating habits.  I have been working towards a diet that is completely void of all that is processed, synthetic, artificially colored or artificially flavored for my family.  I recently read an eBook entitled “The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry is Destroying our Brain” by Carol Simontacchi.  Talk about getting an education that will scare you into eating better, this book will do that for you and then some.  The main premise of the book is that a real, scientifically proven connection exists between the foods we eat and how well our brain’s function.  The author also makes a very strong argument that the increasing violence and tremendous amounts of kids suffering from behavior disorders and depression are also linked to the foods being fed to this generation.  It makes sense and is very disconcerting.

What most people feed their kids these days.

I’m always amazed at what kids bring to school for lunch.  The items are usually more preservatives and additives than real food.  Eating out and grabbing food thru a window is becoming an increasing trend with today’s busy, overworked and overwhelmed families.  It is no wonder we have such a problem with obesity, depression and other spiraling health issues.

Introducing NatureBox: New company has stepped up to the “plate”.

In a recent article in Inc.com, the story of this great new start up shows a real heart for changing these unhealthy trends.

Being an overweight teen who lost 70 pounds by learning to eat right, Gautam Gupta was primed to understand why we buy and consume what we do. And that led him and partner Ken Chen to launch NatureBox

Gupta focused on snack foods, since “Snacking is one of the leading causes of obesity in America, and it is ubiquitious. If we start a business focused on a behavior almost everyone has, we can expand from there,” said Gupta. With an active Facebook page and over 110,000 fans, Gupta said that many of their sales comes from friend pass-along and word-of-mouth. Through their partnership with Feeding America, NatureBox donates one meal for every box they deliver to end children’s hunger.

NatureBox has made it easy to make positive changes in your snacking habits. Your monthly membership delivers hand-picked snacks to your door along with recipes and ideas for healthy snacks.
