The Dangers of Fluoride And How To Avoid Them

Most people in this country take their water for granted and don’t give it too much thought. After all, it’s very accessible here in America. It is readily available every time someone turns on the tap to use that water for cooking, drinking and the many other uses that water is put to in homes all across the country. And many do not give the fluoridation of public water supplies much thought, either –after all, it has been part of American public life for decades, so long that people tend to accept it as normal.

The fact remains, though, that more and more people are speaking out against fluoridation as evidence mounts that not only does it not have the positive effects on oral hygiene that were once promised, it can actually do damage to human health. Read on to find out more about the dangers of fluoride – and how they can be avoided.

What Makes Fluoride so Dangerous?

Many people who grew up hearing about the benefits of fluoridated water may have a hard time believing that there is anything to be worried about. However, there are many problems with this substance, including the fact that:

Fluoride is a known neurotoxin. There are at least 23 studies from countries around the world which have found, for instance, that exposure to fluoride (especially at a young age) lowers the IQ points of children. This damage is irreversible and can have a negative effect on children who are exposed to this chemical which will last them the rest of their lives. The kind of fluoride that is used in drinking water is an artificial substance which can be more easily absorbed by the body than natural forms of it – which means that it can have a greater impact on human health. The fluoride used in the public water supply is not a carefully controlled pharmaceutical grade. Rather, it is a by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry and is mostly purchased by the U.S. from China – which, incidentally, does not permit their public waters to be fluoridated.

How to Avoid Fluoride Exposure

Avoiding fluoride exposure entirely in early impossible because it is not only in the water supplies but in many other common household products as well. However, exposure can be greatly reduced by taking the following measures:

Purchasing a good water filter for the home; if this is not in the budget, than at least by a water filter jug that goes in the refrigerator and can filter small amounts of water at a time for drinking and kitchen use.Avoid toothpastes and other oral hygiene products with fluoride, opting instead for products which are all-natural and fluoride-free.Buy organic food to decrease exposure to pesticide residues which also contain fluoride.

Whichever way you slice it, fluoridation is simply bad news – and because of U.S. public policy, it is literally everywhere across this country. The good news is, however, that while there is no escaping it entirely, there ways that the average person can minimize exposure and protect themselves – and their children – from fluoride’s toxic effects.
