Creating a Non-Toxic Kitchen, Part 2 – Natural Oven Cleaner

image

Oven cleaner has to be one of the worst cleaning products on the market. Not only must you wear gloves and avoid getting it on you for fear of burning but you must also use it in an extremely ventilated place due to the dangers of inhaling it.

Young kids and anyone with breathing problems would be cautioned against even being in the same room when the cleaner is being used.

And it doesn’t end once your oven is clean either. The chemical residues actually linger in the oven after cleaning and get baked into your food. Now there’s a frightening thought!

That’s not the type of product I want in my house, no matter how dirty my oven gets. Luckily, there’s a natural solution which means you can benefit from both having a clean oven and not risking yours or your family’s lives.

You wouldn’t believe that the ingredients that will get your oven shining are also the cheapest and simplest of ingredients: baking soda and vinegar!

You may need to put in a bit more elbow grease but I’d say it’s definitely worth it to avoid the discomforts of using such harsh chemicals. Headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, burnt skin, eating chemicals. It’s just not worth it.

Homemade Oven Cleaner

-1 1/2 cups of baking soda

-a few drops of lemon essential oil (or any other essential oil you have on hand – optional)

-1/4 cup white vinegar

-1 tablespoon liquid soap (preferably homemade – see Part 1)

-water to create a thick paste

Mix all the ingredients together. Add enough water to create a thick paste, and then spread it all over your oven. Leave for 6-8 hours or even overnight. You should see it foaming up.

Now, with a clean bowl of water use a scrubber to wipe off the entire surface of the oven until all the paste has been removed.

Give it a try and see just how clean you can get your oven using safe ingredients. You won’t need to buy another commercial oven cleaner again.
