If you are genuinely interested in building a rock garden in your home, then you have to follow certain steps meticulously in order to make your effort successful.

If you have a gentle slope in your yard that is sunbathed, then there could be no better location to build your rock garden. If you lack such arrangements, you need not worry; you still have hope. As per different climatic conditions and soil conditions the health and requirements of rock garden keeps varying.

  1. The very first step for building a rock garden lies in having a good foundation, which is the base of everything. Even if you are blessed with a wonderful sun-bathed slope, even then having a proper foundation is necessary in order to have a truly appealing rock garden. Ideally all rock gardens require soil which can retain water once and then quickly drain it.
  1. After knowing this requirement, you need to carry on excavation. Ideally the digging of foundation should be done on a day when the soil is dry. After digging down to around one foot, you should remove all the rots and weeds. You could even choose to build your rock garden on a raised bed. In such a case, you should dig down to at least three feet.
  1. The next step involves putting down the drainage layer. Your foundation’s first layer would absorb the additional moisture from the soil on top of it. As per experts, you should make a layer with old pieces of concrete, clunky rocks and broken clay pots so that this layer can make up for one-third to one-half of the depth of the trench.
  1. Putting down the sand layer is next on the line. This water-permeable layer that holds the topsoil should be a layering of about 7 centimeters of crude sand that should be sandwiched between the soil layer and drainage layer.
  1. The soil layer needs to be put down next. This is that one layer which can actually break or make your rock garden! You need to make a perfect mix of soil so that the flowering plants that you plan to have can be in their fullest blooms. Ideally the best combination would be one part each of topsoil, leaf mold and tiny gravel.
  1. Now that you are done with the foundation steps, you should design your rock garden and then plant rocks and flowers in it. You could seek the help of a friend who can suggest some interesting designs and then you can carry the heavy rocks to the rock garden site of your yard.
  1. You could get landscaping rocks from home improvement stores and then scatter the same in order to give the looks of a natural set-up to your garden.
  1. Now is the time to plant your flowers. However, you have to again show patience in understanding which plants can survive the best in your rock garden and this kind of experimenting take time!
  1. Once your rock garden is done, it is time to relax and enjoy it. Although not much maintenance is required, but you have to look out for the weeds from time to time and remove those.
