7 Foods that are ruining your skin in the worst way

While many women are aware that eating certain foods will make you more likely to suffer from a breakout of acne, most do not realize that there are also foods which are just generally unhealthy for your skin and can cause a number of problems including dull, dry skin and wrinkles. Below are some of the biggest culprits.

Sugar
This is one of the worse foods to eat if you want healthy skin. Sugar can break down collagen, the protein that keeps the skin smooth and youthful-looking and can cause inflammation that leads to acne breakouts. It is especially important to avoid the refined sugars like table sugar or, worse, high fructose corn syrup.

Refined Grains
Refined grains — mostly commonly, refined white flour found in white bread and other bakery products – will cause inflammation like sugar does and can also make you more vulnerable to breakouts. Choosing whole grain or sprouted grain breads is a much better option to keep your skin smooth.

Processed Foods
Processed foods like microwave dinner or pre-made pizza are high in sodium (salt). Salt is well-known to such moisture right out of the skin cells and this can leave your skin dry and more prone to breakouts. Healthy, whole-foods eating and keeping hydrated are much better options.

Milk
Many people who are sensitive to dairy are not always aware of that fact. However, dairy products are high in acid and in natural hormones, which can react with your own body’s hormones and cause flare-ups. If you think you are sensitive, consider using almond or soy milk as an alternative.

Processed Fats
Processed fats which are found in a variety of products including chips, cookies, crackers and other snacks, have been heated to high temperatures during processing. This, like refined sugars and grains, can cause inflammation and lead to breakouts and other skin irritations.

Alcohol
Alcohol is a highly acidic beverage and because it is dehydrating, it can leave the skin extremely dry and make it more prone to breakouts. Many mixed drinks are the worst since they already contain high quantities of sugar which is a problem all by itself. Consider the healthier red wine for your drink of choice.

Fast Food
Fast foods are high in processed fats, salt, refined sugars and grains as well as food dyes, meat tainted with hormones and a whole array of other ingredients that will dry out the skin, clog the pores and make it easier to develop both acne and wrinkles. Eating a healthy and natural diet is the best way to nourish and beautify your skin.

These are all foods to avoid if you are aiming for a clear and youthful complexion and want to avoid acne flare-ups. The good news is that a diet based on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein can help nourish the skin but is also good for your overall health.
