5 Types of Salts to Enhance All Your Meals

It can be surprising to many people that salt is not merely – well, salt. There are, in fact, a whole range of salts out there now that you can easily bring into your kitchen to experiment with and use to spice up your meals quickly and simply. Although not all are available in traditional supermarkets, many specialty stores will have them and they are all so flavorful that the extra effort you might have to put into finding them will be well worth it when you wow your family tonight!

Celtic Sea Salt
Most salt is harvested from one sea or another, but the particular location of harvest can make a big difference in how it looks and tastes. Celtic sea salt is one of the best exotic salts out there and it a light gray in color with a taste similar to that of fleur de sel. Because it has a higher moisture content than some salts, you will not be able to serve it with a grinder or shaker, but by hand instead.

Himalayan Pink Salt
The delicate pink color of this salt alone is worth the purchase, but the flavor is out of this world, too. It does not come from the sea, but is mined in the foothills of the Himalayas and you can purchase it in large chunks that you can grate into your meals or simply heat it and cook the foods on it for full flavor.

Hawaiian Black Lava Salt
The jet black color of this salt, with comes from it being mixed with volcanic charcoal, may be a little off-putting to some, but it has a great flavor and you will find it works well in a number of different dishes. Some like to take advantage of this color and use it as a dramatic finishing salt to gourmet dishes.

Bali Pyramid Sea Salt
This salt takes its names from the unusual pyramid-shaped formations from which it is mined in Bali. It is a light, flaky white salt with a wonderful texture and flavor, though it may be harder to locate than some of the others mentioned.

Murray River Salt
As its name suggests, this salt does not come from the sea but is mined from the Murray River in Australia. It has a delicate, yellowish-peach tint to its crystals and it is valued for its very mild flavor that makes it work in a wide variety of dishes.

So the next time you want a simple way to get a little adventurous in the kitchen, consider adding any or all of these salts to your spice rack. The differences in their tastes, colors and textures can certainly add excitement to your next meal!
