We have control over the thoughts we think moment by moment. Creating a wellness mindset requires that we eradicate negative, defeating, limiting thoughts and replace them with positive, uplifting, empowering thoughts.

If you watch the nightly news on a regular basis, chances are that you struggle with negative, defeated thoughts. The news is filled with violence, sadness, and negativity. Filling your mind with this will produce depressed and negative thoughts. Garbage in, garbage out, as it is said. Turn off the news! Read a great book. Watch an inspiring movie. Read the Bible. Read alternative news blogs. Read Wellness Achiever blog. Filling your mind with this positive, happy, inspiring, empowering information will automatically change the way you begin to think.
Key #2: Focus On Positive Outcomes
Every situation we face in life has many different possible outcomes. Do you find yourself typically focusing on the negative outcome, always expecting the worse? Does that always happen? No, of course not. Sometimes things work out great, even better than we could have ever imagined! Why not set your mind on the positive and expect the best? You just might get it! Sometimes, we fill our minds with awesome, empowering thoughts and then open our mouths and our great, big BUT gets in the way and undermines our wellness mindset. I am not talking about your butt. I am talking about something as simple as word placement. Where you put your ‘but’ makes a huge impact on your wellness mindset. How does this happen? Let’s look at some examples. As you read each of these sentence pairs, pause after the ‘but’, read the second half, then pause again and think about how the words make you feel.
I really want to lose weight and feel better BUT exercise is such hard work.
I know that exercise is hard work BUT I really want to lose weight and feel better!
I really want to eat better foods and be healthier BUT I am so confused about healthy eating.
I may be confused about healthy eating BUT I want to be healthier and I will choose healthier foods!
I want to have more positive relationships BUT I just seem to always end up with negative people.
I have a lot of negative people in my life BUT I want to have more positive relationships!
I know that God is in control BUT I just feel like my life is a mess.
I feel like my life is mess BUT I know that God is in control!
What did you notice? After reading the first sentence in each pair, you probably felt defeated, right? After reading the second sentence in each pair, you felt encouraged and empowered! Both sentences say the same things but they have drastically different effects on your mindset.
Your mind will always focus on the phrase that comes after your ‘but’. It is not wrong to have negative thoughts. It is not wrong to express your concerns or feelings. However, it can be defeating if that is all we focus on. Just turn your ‘but’ around and you will instantly change your mindset and produce dramatically better results!
Key #4: Positive People & Relationships
Your life is greatly affected by the people with whom you associate. Every person you meet has an impact on your life. Every relationship you have is either feeding a negative, defeated mindset or it is fueling your positive, wellness mindset. You will find yourself moving towards the dominant mood of any crowd you are in. If you don’t like the mood, change it. If you can’t change it, then leave that crowd. Life is too short to be worried about offending the Negative Nancys and Debbie Downers. Let them be miserable by themselves.
Choose to surround yourself with happy, positive, upbeat people who are going where you want to go. You will find yourself becoming more happy and positive as well. You will find it easier to get through your day and accomplish your goals when you choose to be surrounded and supported by happy, positive people all day.
