12 Natural Antibiotics That Don’t Require Prescription

Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria and they don’t differentiate between good or bed bacteria. As a result every time you swallow antibiotics, you kill the beneficial bacteria within your intestines. Good bacteria in the gut help people in many ways, including helping make vitamins and boosting immunity. Some researchers think that killing them off with antibiotics may be contributing to an increase in chronic health conditions such as obesity, asthma and cancer. If you do need to take antibiotics you should also take probiotics which will help to restore the good bacteria in your gut.

12 Natural Antibiotics That Don’t Require Prescription

Honey

Honey in its raw state was used as an antibacterial agent (antibiotic) long before the synthetic antibiotics were developed in cultures throughout the world for a variety of wounds and diseases.

Today it is scientifically proven that this sweet medicine has antibacterial properties that can effectively cure skin rashes, burns and abrasions. Honey cleans the teeth and mouth of bacteria and stops bleeding gums.

It is also effective in the treatment of ulcers and blisters. When treating wounds or inflammation, it is very important to choose the right honey. Darker honey has better antibacterial power – and it must be in its raw form, it should not be pasteurized.

Green tea

Green tea is ridiculously beneficial for health because it is weighed down with antioxidants and nutrients and of course these have a powerful effect on the body. You need a good supply of antioxidants and nutrients because they improve brain function while at the same time encouraging fat loss, and lowering the risk of tumors. One active ingredient in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (otherwise known as EGCG), which is especially effective against some strains of oral bacteria so swish it around in your mouth to get the benefits.

Oil of oregano

Oil of oregano kills the pathogenic bacteria without disrupting our essential and necessary beneficial bacteria. In addition it is also antiviral and anti-fungal which makes it an extremely powerful 3-in-1 combination but again without encouraging antibiotic resistance, thus making it an attractive alternative to the overused pharmaceuticals.
The key antimicrobial ingredient found in oil of oregano is carvacrol. To be effective the oil needs to contain at least 70 percent carvacrol content.
Oregano oil can be mixed with hand sanitizer, vaporized into the air, rubbed onto the skin, or taken in pill form. 600 mg a day is sufficient for the treatment of stomach parasites.

Echinacea

Native Americans have used echinacea as a way to fight off infections and treat injury for over 400 years. Studies have revealed its ability to lessen pain, diminish inflammation, and act as an antiviral as well as an antioxidant. The glycoproteins, volatile oils, flavonoids, and alkamides in the root all help treat athletes foot, UTIs, ear infections, and injuries that heal slowly.

Echinacea is available in tinctures, pills, extracts, and ointments. It’s commonly found in capsules and tablets mixed in with other natural health supplements. The root can also be put into hot tea. See here the recipe for echinacea tea to boost your immune system.

Garlic

Garlic has been involved through the centuries by many cultures medicinally. In the 1700′s garlic was used to ward off the deadly plague. It possesses powerful antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial properties. Research has shown that it helps protect good bacteria and eliminate unfriendly bacteria. It is extremely high in natural antioxidants that are found to destroy free radicals, which in turn supports a stronger immune system. It is the active ingredient allicin that is the vital component to destroying as well as warding off the harmful bacteria.
Use crushed to activate these compounds, and eat it raw, in a warm tea, or in lightly cooked food. There are also garlic oils, extracts, and freeze-dried tablets available.

Olive Leaf Extract

The fruit, leaves, and seeds of the olive tree are packed with natural health benefits. It can treat infections, both viral and bacterial, and also increases healthy purifying bacteria in the stomach. The polyphenol called oleuropein and fatty acids found in the plant are the main components in medical use. Find more information in my article about the health benefits of olive leaf including how to make your own olive leaf extract.

Olive leaf extract is most effective as a pill, topical cream, and liquid extract. It can be applied directly to the skin or consumed with a suggested maximum of 60g per day.

Ginger

Ginger has long been recommended as an effective way to ward off nausea brought on by motion sickness or pregnancy. The phenol compounds known as shogaols and gingerols are the active component in the root that contribute to the anti-inflammatory benefits as well as lowering cholesterol.
It is easy to incorporate ginger in our daily diets. It makes a very healthy addition to juices and smoothies or made into a tea. You can also find ginger extracts, tinctures, capsules and oils in natural health stores.

Coconut oil

The saturated fats found in coconut oil contain antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties which strengthen your immune system. Coconut oil can further benefit the skin by treating and preventing skin infections and also helps in treating various skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and many more. Coconut oil has anti-microbial properties which help to fight indigestion-causing bacteria, fungi and parasites and has been effectively used to prevent and cure candida. Some of the most promising research in recent years has been in the area of using lauric acid or monolaurin, both derived from coconut oil, in treatments for antibiotic resistant super germs.

Cinnamon

In a study conducted by a group of surgeons, it was found that cinnamon can kill most of bacteria found in hospitals, while in another study was found that cinnamon can kill bacteria resistant to standard antibiotics, and in the third study, it was discovered that cinnamon’s mortal enemy is Escherichia coli.

Andrographis Paniculata

The root and leaf of this South Asian plant has a commonplace in relieving cold symptoms. It’s also been used to treat insect bites, hemorrhoids and a wide variety of infections. The active ingredient in most andrographis supplements is called andrographolide.

The best bet for this supplement is to search for capsules and tablets containing no less than 20% andrographolide. Look at the recommended dosage on the label.

Clove

Even today, dentists use clove oil as oral antiseptic and disinfecting root canals (very familiar scent that can be felt in almost every dental office). Eugenol, which is found in large quantities in clove, is regarded as the primary antimicrobial compound of the plant. This fact has been documented by many scientists around the world.

If you want to relieve a toothache, chew cloves for a couple of minutes and the pain will completely stop within two hours. However, Clove is most effective when it is turned into oil.

Reishi

Gaining a bit more attention as of late, reishi is part of the medicinal mushroom family and is known as not only a superior immune modulator, but also an extremely potent antibacterial, viral, and fungal agent.

Reishi will support other key areas of the body, namely the immune system and the liver. A healthy liver will help support a strong attack on foreign invaders and help detoxify the body if you get an infection.

In addition to these powerful natural remedies, you can also consider olive leaf extract, cloves, turmeric, cayenne, and even lemons to round out your natural pharmacy.
