10 Serious Lack of Vitamin D Warning Signs

image

Vitamin D deficiency is much more common than many people realize, and in some ways this has been made worse by people wearing sunscreen and protective clothes, since sunlight is a natural and abundant Vitamin D source. What is worse is that many people do not even realize that they have this problem. Below are some of the most common warning signs that your Vitamin D is low.

Depression

Vitamin D is needed for the production of the “feel good” hormone serotonin; it makes sense, then that one of the most common signs of this deficiency is depression due to lack of serotonin.

Bone Pain

Bone pain is also a symptoms that you might be low in Vitamin D, as it is one of the nutrients, along with calcium, needed for bone health.

Muscle Weakness

Muscles have Vitamin D receptors than require a constant supply of this nutrient; a lack of it can cause chronic muscle weakness and problems with overall muscle function.

Respiratory Problems

Although respiratory problems can have many root causes, having minor infections or illnesses of the respiratory tract chronically can be another sign that your Vitamin D levels are low.

Constant Infections

Constant or chronic infections of any kind (whether respiratory or not), are another possible sign of Vitamin D deficiency, as it is a necessary nutrient for good immune system function.

Fatigue

The body also needs Vitamin D to create energy; without it, feelings of tiredness could easily become chronic, even after a good night’s sleep, and make it hard to work or do what you need to do.

Heart Disease

While the cause is not clear, many studies have uncovered a link between deficient Vitamin D levels and the development of congestive heart failure.

Psoriasis

Again, the link between a lack of Vitamin D and the development of the skin condition psoriasis is not clear, but Vitamin D supplementation is often used to treat it.

Sweating

Sweating, especially around the head, is another sign that your Vitamin D might be lacking. It is common in new mothers and is a tell-tale sign.

High Blood Pressure

Studies have shown that in women in particular, a lack of Vitamin D can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which in turn can increase the risk for heart attacks and strokes.

If you feel like you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are concerned, discuss these with your doctor. A simple blood test can reveal if you truly are Vitamin D deficient and if this is the case, you can sit down with your physician and come up with a plan of action to help treat this problem before it leads to any serious complications.
