Prostate cancer is one that comes without an early warning signs. However, there are things you can do to help detect prostate cancer early so treatments can be provided as soon as possible. One of the ways to help detect the cancer early is with a regular prostate exam.

What is a prostate medical exam?

The prostate exam is when a doctor inserts a gloved lubricated finger into your rectum to feel your prostate gland for any abnormal growths such as lumps or tumors. Sometimes a digit probe is used instead to detect the cancer. If cancer is suspected, a prostate biopsy will need to be done in order too further evaluate if you have the cancer or not. If cancer is found, treatments such as surgery, radiation, hormone therapy or chemotherapy may be necessary in order to fight it.

What are the risk factors for prostate cancer?

The risk factors of developing prostate cancer depend on:

  1. Age: Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than 40-years old, but the chances do increase over the age of 50.
  2. Race/Ethnicity/ Nationality: Prostate cancer typically occurs in African-American men, Caribbean men and men who commonly live in areas such as North American, northwestern Europe, and Australia. The reasons to why the cancer is found more often in these men is unknown, but it could be lifestyle, diet, environmental factors and genetics.
  3. Family History: If your family has a history of prostate cancer, it is wise to be screen for the cancer as soon as a doctor recommends it. It seems to be common for men to inherit the prostate cancer gene from their elders, which increases the likelihood of developing the disease.
  4. Diet: Eating a well-balanced diet with adequate hydration from water is crucial for preventing prostate cancer. It seems more men who consumer more red meats and high fat dairy products increase their chances of developing the cancer than men who actually eat a diet rich in super foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Prostate cancer has also been linked to high doses of calcium levels within the body.
  5. Obesity: Being overweight from unhealthy eating habits or a medical condition can increase your chances of developing prostate cancer. The best way to decrease your chances of developing the cancer is to loose weight and maintain a healthier one.
  6. Smoking: If you are a heavy smoker, it is possible that this could increase your chances of developing the disease.
  7. Environmental Factors: Working or living in an area where you are exposed to harmful toxins and substances could cause prostate cancer to develop. Limiting your exposure to these toxic areas is the only way to reduce your risks.
  8. Sexually Transmitted Infections: Those who have suffered from a sexually transmitted disease in the past or an ongoing one could be potentially at risk for developing prostate cancer within their lifetime. Practicing safe sex is an excellent way to protect you from such illnesses.
  9. Prostate Inflammation: If your prostate gland is always inflamed the chances of developing prostate cancer in the future is possible.
  10. Vasectomy: Men under the age of 35 who receive a vasectomy procedure could potentially increase their chances of developing prostate cancer. However, the chances do seem to be slim to none.

Bottom Line for Prostate Cancer

Eating a well-balanced diet and living a high lifestyle can decrease your chances of developing prostate cancer. However, if prostate cancer runs in your family or you know you unhealthy, it is wise to get regular prostate screening to help detect the signs of prostate cancer.
